Catoosa County – According to Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office incident report, On November 12th, 2022, at 2:25 AM, Deputy Weaver was sitting stationary running LIDAR on the off-ramp of Exit 345 Southbound when he observed a vehicle traveling at 99mph in a 70mph zone.

According to the report, “Deputy Weaver observed the vehicle making sporadic lane changes, without using a turn signal, and failing to maintain lane by swerving into the middle lane numerous times and then jerking it back into the vehicle’s original lane of travel. The vehicle passed Deputy Weaver at 99mph and did not apply the brakes.

Deputy Weaver pulled out behind the vehicle. Deputy Weaver observed the vehicle hit the fog line numerous times.” Deputy Weaver initiated a traffic stop and made contact with the driver Preston Ben Dworkin, 26, of Rossville.

As Deputy Weaver was walking up to the vehicle, he noticed the driver spraying on cologne and throwing numerous bags into the back of the van. According to the report, “Deputy Weaver stated, “Good morning I’m Deputy Weaver with the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office. Do you know why I pulled you over?” The driver stared at Deputy Weaver with blankly stare and stated, “Idk”. Deputy Weaver asked the driver how fast he thought he was going.

The driver stated, “I had it locked on 75″. Deputy Weaver informed the driver he checked him at 99mph, and when he passed him, he maintained that speed. The driver said there was no way he was going that fast.” Deputy Weaver informed Dworkin he smelt the odor of alcohol. The driver said there was no way he hadn’t had anything to drink tonight, run all the tests you want”.

Deputy Weaver then located six empty bottles of Bud Light. Deputy Weaver asked Dworkin again how much he had to drink, and the complainant stated he only had two bud lights. Deputy Kuzma assisted with field sobriety testing on Dworkin and observed several clues of impairment and a BAC of .097 on a PBT.

Dworkin was then placed under arrest for DUI and refused the state test. Dworkin was transported to the Catoosa County Jail and charged with DUI, speeding, and failure to maintain a single lane.

Unknown Individuals are Continuing to Cut Sections of Cable from Several Telephone Poles

Community, Police & Government

Information Needed– Unknown individuals are continuing to cut sections of cable from several telephone poles on Lane Road between Alabama Highway and West Nickajack Road causing television and internet outages in the area.

The offenders cut the cables to steal copper wire but the pictured cables that were cut had recently been upgraded to fiber optic cables that did not contain copper wire and were left hanging from the poles causing thousands of dollars in damages.

Over the past several months, the offenders have cut cables on Lane Road, West Nickajack Road, and Hullender Road.

The locations are in a remote area of the county and the crimes have been occurring during the night when there is less traffic on the roadways.

Due to the repeated cases in the same locations, it is believed the offenders may live in the immediate area.

During past investigations, evidence obtained indicated the offenders had used a “deer stand” type ladder to climb the poles and would be driving a pickup truck carrying the stand and possible ladder.

If you live in the area and have noticed anything suspicious, or have any information, please contact Captain Jeremy Keener with the Catoosa County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 935-2424.

COVID-19 Update

Press Release
The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed the first case of COVID-19 caused by the Omicron variant in Georgia. The individual recently traveled from South Africa and developed mild symptoms and subsequently tested positive for COVID-19. Genomic sequencing confirmed the presence of the Omicron variant. The individual is isolating at home and contact tracing is underway to identify close contacts at risk of infection. This is the first identified in-state case of Omicron. DPH was notified Dec. 3 of a Georgia resident currently in New Jersey who tested positive for the Omicron variant.
Scientists continue to study the Omicron variant to determine how quickly and easily it spreads, whether it causes more severe illness and how well the current COVID vaccines protect against it.
“Vaccination is key to preventing further transmission of COVID-19 and helps prevent new variants like Omicron from emerging,” said Kathleen E. Toomey, M.D., M.P.H., commissioner of the Georgia Department of Public Health. “It also is important to remember that even as Omicron is emerging, we are still in the midst of a pandemic currently being fueled by the Delta variant.”
All Georgians over the age of 5 are now eligible for COVID vaccination. Booster doses of vaccine are recommended for adults 18 and older who completed their first series of vaccine at least six months ago. The CDC also recommends general prevention measures such as wearing a mask in public settings, staying 6 feet from others, avoiding crowds and poorly ventilated spaces, and frequently washing your hands to protect against COVID-19.
Individuals who have symptoms of COVID-19 or who may have been exposed to someone with COVID should get tested.
To find a COVID vaccine or COVID testing location near you log on to dph.ga.gov.
DPH will continue to monitor Omicron developments and provide updates as new information becomes available.
